Description

The Run to Remember is a 4.03 mile run/walk held at Coldstream Park in Lexington to remember and honor 403 New York City Firefighters, Police Officers and Port Authority Police Officers who died in the line of duty on September the 11th, 2001 in response to the terrorist attack on America. The Run to Remember is a fundraiser for UK Children's Hospital. Because of our sponsors, every penny not designated to our memorial (see note below in online registration) goes to the Children's Hospital. The run will take place this year at Coldstream Research Park on Newtown Pike at 7:00 pm on September 11th, 2015. In 2011 year we had over 100 runners. Our donation last year provided BIS monitors for the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the University of Kentucky Children's Hospital.

The run is sponsored by the Fellowship of Christian Firefighters, the International Association of Firefighters Local 526 and this year we have been joined by our corporate sponsor: EMERGENCY MEDICAL TRAINING PROFESSIONALS, LLC.

About the Race

No one will ever forget the tragic events of September 11, 2001. In fact, when the topic is brought up, it is often in the context of the horror and sorrow that will forever accompany that date in history. However, in the days and months that followed those events, the United States Fire Service was the unsolicited recipient of an incredible and perhaps unprecedented wave of public support and good will. It was with this silver lining in mind that in 2004, Lt. Stewart Dawson (ret.), Chaplain of the Lexington Fire Department, initiated what is now known as “The Week of Giving.” This tradition continues under the leadership of the current Chaplain, Cecil Tatum. Occuring annually around Sept. 11, this week is set aside specifically for the members of the Lexington Fire Dept. to remember and honor all those who died on Sept 11th, 2001 and all those who have served in the response to that terrorist attack. It is also an effort to unite the LFD in giving back to the community which continually supports it’s public servants.

In addition to it's purpose to remember and honor the public safety officers who died that week, we also use this race as physical outreach for our firefighters to children at UK Children's Hospital. Before the race we pay a few visits to children's Hospital. We play games with them, have tea, or just chat - whatever that child desires. We tell them that we will be running in their honor because "they are winners in our eyes for the battles they are fighting in the hospital". Then after the race, we return to the hospital and give our medals (every firefighter who runs get's a medal) to the children in the hospital at that time. It is usually a whole different group of children. We tell those children that they too are winners in our eyes. They are winners as they fight whatever illness they have. This is always a great time for our firefighters and the children.
